Breaking His Word, Obama Opts Out of Public Finance

I am opposed to the Obama campaign opting out of the public financing system. The reason this system was instituted was to help control the corruption that marked the pre-Watergate era of politics. Indeed, the problem with the public financing system is that it isn't total. Our political system should be completely publicly financed and there should be sharp limits on the degree to which the parties propagandize the public. Political representatives should be forced into dialogue with representatives of labor, the environment, women, immigrants, etc.

On a questionnaire Obama pledged to "aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election." He has broken that commitment with this decision.
