The Republican base is shrinking and the Democratic base is growing. All this is real, but it's even more potential. This means that a centrist progressive liberal like Hillary Clinton would likely amass a vast coalition that could make the Democratic Party the dominant party well into the future. Instead, the Democratic Party is hellbent on nominating a polarizing figure who and pursuing a direction that will serve to refocus the Republican base and strengthen the Republican Party into the future. In other words, instead of capitalizing on Bush's unpopularity, the Democratic Party is re-establishing the battle lines that have led to Republican strength in electoral politics.
